contested-metrics: what it makes your agent do, and what it refuses.

contested-metrics handles the numbers that are wrong with a right value. The arithmetic ties, every gate passes, and the figure still means something other than the reader assumes, because a metric without its definition is not a number and nobody said which definition this is.

The job contested-metrics does

This is the largest source of silent wrong numbers in business reporting and it is invisible to every check that verifies arithmetic. The practice runs before the first compute. Find the fork by asking whether two departments would define the word differently without noticing, starting with the forks that cost the most: unit, population, timing, and treatment of returns. Name who owns each variant, because a default chosen by a billing system is not a decision. Pick with the operator, record the choice as a dated ruling, and print the definition beside the number in the same weight as a unit. Then tie the figure to a base the file itself asserts, and refuse when it asserts none.

What contested-metrics refuses

A skill is worth what it stops as much as what it produces. These are the refusals written into contested-metrics, taken from the rules and limits in its own file.

✓Computing first and defining later. Once a number is on a page it is believed, and the definition argument then happens after the damage.
✓Disclosure in a tooltip. A definition the reader has to hover to see is one they will not see, so it sits beside the number.
✓An invented denominator. No stated base means no rate, and a count labelled unverified beats a ratio over a number somebody made up.
✓Averaging a rate to roll it up. Rates recompute from components and compound over time.
✓One definition carried across sources. Two vendors can mean different things by the same word, and a blended headline reliably describes nothing.

**Detection is not disclosure until it renders.** Any flag the screen raises
travels to every surface that shows the affected figure: the headline, the
rollup tables, the check table, and the export. A check table that counts a
flag while the page beside it shows the figure clean at face value is a
contradiction, and the contradiction gate (doctrine 1) fails the build.
Rollup figures inherit the PROPOSED tag of any ruling they rest on, so a
screenshotted table cannot escape its certification state.

A base can be internally consistent and still be the wrong base. Reconciling to the file's own denominator proves the arithmetic, not that you and the reader share a mental model of the word. A modelled base, such as promotional lift against a counterfactual, cannot be checked at all, and a source that switches basis row to row hides a fork the spec level never sees.
